3. Divine
Divine (born Harris Glenn Milstead) was a uniquely subversive underground cult hero who performed in drag. Divine was a crucial part of the core acting troupe used by filmmaker John Waters, appearing in his earliest experimental movies as well as his cult classics Pink Flamingos and Polyester, not to mention one of Waters’ more enduring mainstream flicks, 1988’s Hairspray. Three weeks after the premiere of Hairspray, Divine died in his sleep due to complications from an enlarged heart. He was 42.
