A left-field comedic genius, Andy Kaufman came to most people’s attention in the late-’70s via appearances on Saturday Night Live and his role as Latka on the hit TV show Taxi. His subversive public stunts — like his pro-wrestling stint, during which he fought women — led many to believe that his death in 1984 was a hoax. But his estate produced a death certificate that showed he indeed passed away from lung cancer at the age of 35.
