For a television show loosely based on a German candy, the Adventures of the Gummi Bears series had a pretty impressive run, running Saturday mornings for six years. But what makes it less surprising is that it was the first big animated television hit for entertainment behemoth Disney. In the vein of the popular Smurfs cartoons but with an animation style akin to Disney’s big screen smashes, the Gummi Bears show was pushed by new Disney CEO Michael Eisner, whose child reportedly loved the candy treats. The show lasted six seasons and lived on later on the Disney channel and via a DVD release in the current millennium. It’s currently available on the Disney+ streaming service.
