The massive popularity of video games faded by the mid-’80s, but rebounded by the end of the decade with the rise of new consoles from Nintendo and Sega. In 1989, video games returned to the Saturday morning cartoon lineup in the form of Captain N: The Game Master, which followed the adventures of Captain N, aka Kevin Keene, a California teen who gets sucked into his TV and a universe called Videoland with his trusty, bandana-wearing dog Duke. The show included references to and characters from several Nintendo games (the “N” stands for Nintendo, after all), including Mega Man, Punch Out!!, Kid Icarus and Castlevania. In Captain N’s second and third seasons it was paired with Super Mario Bros. cartoons.
