Gamer-oriented cartoons weren’t limited to video game characters in the ’80s. Based on the incredibly popular fantasy/adventure role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons fared well in the ratings, despite being quite a bit more complex and occasionally darker than the majority of kid’s programming. The Dungeons & Dragons animated show was criticized for being too violent for young children. In 1985, parental group the National Coalition on Television Violence demanded that the show include a warning about its supposed violence, citing teen murders and suicides it claimed were inspired by the game.
